Every week, Ryan McGee and I talk about all things television on the 'Talking TV with Ryan & Ryan' podcast, which can be found on iTunes, and starting this week, on Stay Tuned as well.
Each week there are two podcasts -- a 'Mad Men' edition and a non-'Mad Men' podcast. This week's guest for the 'Mad Men' podcast is Time TV critic James Poniewozik, and the three of us discussed the season so far and Sunday's episode, 'Waldorf Stories,' in particular. Has 'Saturday Night Live' Found a New Barack Obama in Comedian Jay Pharoah?Filed under: TV News Could 'Saturday Night Live' have found a fourth new hire? If the most recent buzz in comedy circles is to be believed, one of the reported new cast members could already be getting a promotion -- to President.
According to blogger Sean McCarthy of "The Comics' Comic," comedian Jay Pharoah "is just about a done deal" to join the cast of the 36th season of 'SNL' later this month. Taran Killam, Paul Brittain and Vanessa Bayer are all rumored to be joining the cast as well. The most interesting part of this news is that Pharoah will bring a host of characters and impressions to the show, including a new and fresh take on President Barack Obama,
McCarthy doesn't have a solid confirmation that 'SNL' will impeach Fred Armisen from the Obama role and replace him with Pharoah, but noted that it's the most likely scenario. TV Squad has found a video of Pharoah's Obama impersonation, posted after the jump. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments 3. EXCLUSIVE: 'Jerseylicious' Season 2 Sneak PeekFiled under: TV Previews You better watch out on the floor of the Gatsby Salon in 'Jerseylicious' this year -- or you just may get clipped.
An exclusive season 2 clip of the Style Network reality series shows an altercation between Tracy and a person who appears to be Olivia. We can't exactly tell because the fists and hair are flying so ferociously.
Anyway, Olivia will definitely in the middle of a major plotline this season: the tug of war between Gatsby-owner Gayle and Alexa, the Glam Fairy who's intent on using her influence in the 'Jerseylicious' salon.
"Myself and Alexa have a little confrontation,'' Jerseylicious' Gayle Giacomo told TV Squad. "We're different, business-wise.'' Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments 4. Eliminated 'Top Chef: DC' Contestant Talks About the 'Emotional Roller Coaster'Filed under: Celebrity Interviews, Summer TV There was a lot more at stake in last night's episode of 'Top Chef: DC' than usual. And, while bonus prizes like a new car, a trip to London and getting to see the Space Shuttle launch were nice incentives, it was the thrill of going to Singapore for the finales that really lit a fire under the remaining cheftestants.
Unfortunately, as Kevin said, "there's five chefs left and only four seats to Singapore. That fifth person, the one that's not going, is going to be crushed." True enough. Read on to get the details.

(VIDEO)Filed under: TV Replay We're not going to say this clip makes Jerry Lewis seem like an angry, half-crazed old man, because we're afraid he might hit us.
On 'Inside Edition' (weekdays, syndicated), Lewis went on a tirade against young Hollywood and said that Lindsay Lohan needs a "smack in the mouth" followed by a firm spanking to set her straight. You'll be able to join British chef Jamie Oliver for a second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
ABC has ordered six more episodes of the the Emmy-winning show, but with a slight format change. While the first season focused on Oliver's efforts to completely overhaul the lunch program at a school in West Virginia, season 2 will see him hit up schools, offices, homes and restaurants in Los Angeles. Professional Organizer Dorothy Breininger Talks 'Hoarders' Season 3 And Shares Clutter Control TipsFiled under: Features, Celebrity Interviews I can't say I enjoy watching 'Hoarders.' In fact, it is probably one of the most difficult shows on television to sit through. Still, like so many of you, I am addicted to the A&E series, which kicks off a third season of extreme clutter control with two new back-to-back episodes on Mon., Sept. 6 at 9PM ET.
"Season 3 is by far the most emotional season," said Dorothy Breininger, a professional organizer and consulting producer on the show who dares to enter the homes of hoarders all across America. "Before we were dealing with people who had stuff. Now we're dealing with people who have no other choice but to get rid of their stuff -- if they don't, they'll lose their homes and their families. This is it for them."
Read on as Breininger, who is also president and founder of the Delphi Center for Organization, spoke to TV Squad about the show and offered tips on how to let go of the stuff that is drowning not just hoarders but all of us living in a society in which we just can't get enough. Better Watch Those Last Two 'Better Off Ted' EpisodesFiled under: Recaps, Stay Tuned Oh, 'Better Off Ted' and 'Party Down,' why did you have to be so good? You made most other comedies seem leaden and false by comparison.
Fans of 'Better Off Ted' had to put up with a lot during its two-season run, which ended in cancellation. The critically acclaimed show was mostly ignored by ABC, despite the fact that it developed into an increasingly hilarious workplace comedy.
You'd have thought the biggest indignity faced by Ted and the crew at Veridian Dynamics was ABC's cracked-out scheduling of the show (season 2 premiered in December, one of television's most fatal dead zones, and one episode aired on New Year's Day, which is almost the same as not airing at all).
But no, there were more indignities to come. ABC held on to the final two episodes of the show like a corporate executive clutching a bonus check. The network even teased us earlier in the summer by scheduling a tentative airdate for the episodes, which was of course rescinded. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments 9. Why Bringing Neil Gaiman's 'Sandman' to TV is a Bad IdeaFiled under: TV News, Stay Tuned Battle stations, comic-book nerds: A possible TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 'The Sandman' is in the works.
This is probably a bad idea.
Of course, this adaptation is still in the early stages, and as is the case with most properties being developed for television, it's entirely possible (if not probable) that the project will never get made.
Still, there are quite a few reasons to treat the idea of a TV version of 'Sandman,' which tells the story of the Dream (or Morpheus) and his similarly powerful siblings, with extreme caution. I say that despite reading that 'Supernatural' creator Eric Kripke may take the lead role in the development of the 'Sandman' series.
Those who've read my work in the past will know that I'm a serious 'Supernatural' fan, and whatever ups and downs that show may have had over the past five seasons, Kripke's ability to mine the moral and emotional potential of genre fare has proved to be exceptional.
So it's not that I think Kripke (who isn't officially on board yet) isn't the right guy for the job. It's just that I'm not sure the job can or should be done. After the jump are just five of the reasons why I think a 'Sandman' adaptation is probably a bad idea. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments 11. For the family that's the focus of TLC's new reality show, 'Sextuplets Take New York,' that phrase could be changed to Carpio diem.
The Carpio family consists of two loving parents, one 10-year-old, and six 23-month-old babies. Each day is a challenge that they seize with love, understanding and determination to succeed.
'Sextuplets Take New York' premieres Sept. 14 at 10PM on TLC, and if it seems like it might be similar to 'Jon & Kate Plus Eight,' that's no coincidence. Both shows have the same producers. Celebrities Deny 'Dancing With the Stars' SnubsFiled under: TV News, Fall TV Bummed that Joel McHale passed on the chance to join the cast of 'Dancing With the Stars' season 11? Well, don't be -- because he didn't.
The 'Community' actor's representative told E! Online that he was never asked. "...It is 100 percent false that he was offered a spot on this year's show."
The Hollywood Reporter story also named Tim Allen, Kirstie Alley, Suzanne Somers and a gaggle of other celebrities who reportedly shot down the offers to go after the mirrorball trophy. Now, some celebrities like McHale are shooting back, saying they were never offered a spot. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments 14. British Judge Un-Helmets The StigFiled under: TV News Last week, the BBC tried to stop a major book publisher from revealing the identity of "The Stig," the "tame racing driver" from BBC's 'Top Gear.'
The judge went ahead and revealed it for them. Well done, judgey-wudgey. I can't wait to see how he handles next week's ax murder case. Something tells me I'd better whip out the ponchos left over from that Gallagher concert.
The judge refused to import an injunction against HarperCollins that would have prevented them from publishing a book that reveals The Stig's true identity in great detail. Upon hearing the judge's decision, HarperCollins issued a press release that definitively reveals his identity.
A strong word of warning: if you prefer to continue enjoying the mystery of The Stig's, er, mysteriousness, I strongly recommend that you do not read the rest of this story after the jump. All complaints about spoilers will be met with scorn and/or ridicule (possibly in that order, depending on how much energy we have at the time). Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments 15. Harvey Keitel to Replace Steve Carell in 'The Office'?Filed under: TV News We've heard plenty of suggestions on whom 'The Office' should hire to replace Steve Carell when the actor's contract expires at the end of this season, but the latest rumor is the most unexpected. Producer Paul Lieberstein, who plays Carell's 'Office'-mate Toby, wants Harvey Keitel to fill Michael Scott's shoes.
Yep, you read that right. The veteran actor, who has worked with Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, is Lieberstein's first choice for the role. "He's probably the only guy who can do it, and he's doing TV now," Lieberstein told E! Online. True -- Keitel starred on the one-season wonder 'Life On Mars.' Happy 90210 Day: What's Your Favorite Scene From 'Beverly Hills, 90210'?Filed under: Features Today is 9/02/10, making it the perfect day to celebrate all things 'Beverly Hills, 90210' (we can throw in The CW's updated version, '90210,' too).
You can join the Facebook page (of course) for 90210 Day, which claims that President Barack Obama will officially recognize this date as "International Beverly Hills, 90210 Day" if it signs up 10,000 fans (so far, less than 200 -- sad!).
Regardless of whether 90210 Day get the presidential seal of approval, we can still honor one of the soapiest, cheesiest and addictive shows on television. Have the 'Hawaii Five-0' Promos Turned Off Viewers Already?Filed under: Features, Fall TV Unless you've been living isolation without benefit of television service or any outside media, you're very much aware that the most anticipated new drama series on CBS this fall is 'Hawaii Five-0.' Or should I say the reboot, revamped new 2010 edition of the original Jack Lord police show that ran from 1968 to 1980.
It's no surprise that CBS would be hyping the heck out of their new incarnation, but at some point the hype has gone overboard, if you'll pardon the pun. The rolling waves, the all-too-familiar music, the plethora of promotion has been incessant, prompting me to wonder if it's all become too much. Here's three reasons the CBS hype may have already turned off viewers ... Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments 18. Neil Gaiman's 'The Sandman' Being Developed as a TV SeriesFiled under: TV News It was only a matter of time before television producers began heavily using comic books as source material. After all, movie producers have been doing it for years.
Neil Gaiman's seminal comic book series 'The Sandman' has been floundering in film development since the mid '90s. It became obvious that the complex story lines and multiple characters arcs would play much better as a TV series. HBO and James Mangold began sniffing around the project, but never bit in.
Now The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Warner Bros. TV is in the process of grabbing the television rights for 'The Sandman' from its sister company, DC Entertainment. The company is also in talks with several writer-producers to develop the project, including 'Supernatural' creator Eric Kripke as the frontrunner. However, Kripke is expressing hesitation in tackling a project that already has such a passionate nerd following. Even the smallest details will be analyzed and criticized. On the Scene: 'America's Got Talent' Names 5 Final FinalistsFiled under: Features, Celebrity Interviews The last five acts have been chosen as the finalists in 'America's Got Talent.' They include the physics-defying Fighting Gravity, magician Michael Grasso, stunt bicyclist Jeremy Vanshoonhoven and judges' favorite Jackie Evancho, the pint-sized opera singer.
Studio One Young Beast Society was selected as the last finalist by the judges over singer Alice Tan Ridley. Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne voted for the young dance group first making judge Howie Mandel's selection a moot one.
"I am so thrilled," Mandel told TV Squad after taping. "I love not being part of that decision. I don't want to be responsible for sending anyone home. Tonight, I got to sit back and be like the audience. At this point in the competition, all the talent is worthy of going through." (Mandel says he'll save what his choice would have been for his memoir.)
"There was no shadow of doubt in my mind," Osbourne said as to why she picked the dance troupe. "Alice has a really good fan base. She's popular. Her life will change for the better." Top 10 Finalists Named on 'America's Got Talent' (VIDEO)Filed under: TV Replay Nick Cannon announced the five acts that would complete the Top 10 finalists on this season's 'America's Got Talent' (Wed., 9PM ET on NBC). Were there any surprises?
[Spoiler alert.]
Well, one shoo-in made it through: the talented Jackie Evancho. The 10-year-old opera singer humbly thanked America for voting for her. More shocking was that 'AGT' will have its first magician in the finals: Michael Grasso.
The judges had to pick between Studio One Young Beast Society and Alice. Check the video for their decision and the other winners. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
